And so are the PSUs, so it is unlikely your old PSU's will be of any use. Therefore it is often not such a bad thing to buy a system off the shelf and simply replace it completely after a while rather than upgrade it.

PCs are becoming more like consoles in this respect (laptops already were).

This is so much waste! The only things that can be reused, like keyboards, are the very things that always come coupled with new computers. Fuck even speakers become obsolete as the standards change.

U don't want to be salvaging shit anyway as the new stuff is faster, quieter more energy efficient.....certainly not on your primary PC.

If we just focus on my PC box, I spent maybe $1500 or so nearly 2.5 yrs ago....$12 a week for a powerful PC....less if I keep it longer and I have no reason to upgrade for the foreseeable future.

I give up, this budget case was a huge mistake. I'm going to return the two I haven't completely destroyed and get half decent cases.

Damn it, talk about shooting yourself in the foot. I managed to get everything plugged in (though it still looks like a bomb exploded inside the case) and I installed Windows XP (32 bit) and fired up Crysis. It crashed during the intro movie. I tried again and skipped the intro, and it crashed before "Helena Rosenthal" came on and did her monologue about the dig. I ran it again on lowest resolution/lowest settings and it crashed again, this time Helena managed to get her name out. I think it's the PSU b/c I doubt the CPU is overheated. It's probably the GTX 460 being a whore of a video card. The operating system works fine though. I'll try another video game.

Take a look at the specs of the power supply and see if these match the requirements of the video card, usually the specs of the PSU are on a label on the PSU itself so this should be pretty straightforward. It seems possible that this PSU provides insufficient amps on the 12v rail, like I had with my Antec.

The power supply is so ghetto it doesn't even have a sticker. The case is super ghetto, the screws are all different types, which tells me some chinese guy took whatever was left on the ground and tossed it in there

I just installed FEAR2 --it took an extremely long time too-- and I managed to play through the intro, and then right after that loser says "Nice of you to join us sunshine" it crashed again.

Shitty PSU

I switched to a 500W PSU I had and it seems to be working fine now.

But holy fuck, Crysis is a beast. I had it set to 1900x1200, 16xAA and all High, and in this one scene I had 30 fps (all in Windows XP 32). I changed the config files so everything is technically now on Very High, and the FPS dropped down to 20! If I ran this on Windows 7 I think I would get 15 fps!

But You really understand why this is. FEAR 2 takes so many short cuts. For example the rooms are tiny, and the facial animations are not as good, nor are the fabrics being animated.

I've been testing Crysis on my rig with the following settings

-1900x1200
-16 FSAA
-VSYNC
-Very High Settings (Windows XP hack)
-Windows XP 32 bit

Most of the outdoor levels average 18-22 fps.
Some of the indoor levels can get as high as 30 fps
The ice levels average 14-18 fps
The last level averages 10 fps

I tried overclocking the CPU with no affect. The only other thing I can think of to boost performance is to get the 64 bit Windows XP.

However, this game must be played on the very high settings. The ragdoll effects are so much more fun. I literally just go around grabbing gooks and terrorizing their squad members

Why do you need FSAA? AFAIK that eats quite a lot of GPU power.

oh ya thats right, you should also try to cork your head into a donkeys ass, maybe you could get higher framerates that way on your shitbox

That I know, but is this of any importance at all? Maybe turning it off allows smooth performance on extra high settings.

It will boost performance, but the quality will take a hit

No, you gain quality because it allows you to use higher settings.

And if these jaggies bother you so much (i.e. the increase in quality offered by going from high to ultra high does not compensate sufficiently) then try using a lower AA multiplier, maybe 4X gives you smooth framerates at ultra high. But I'm sure you figured that out yourself, I'm just mentioning this for slightly less knowledgeable beings like the captn, he will read this some day and get a . sign13.gif -moment.

From my understanding, fullscreen anti aliasing (FSAA) removes jaggies by taking every pixel and testing the values of the pixels around it. If it forms a line then it smooths out this line. Using more pixels around it (2,4,8,16) allows for more accurate algorithms.

Full *Scene* Anti Aliasing.

Full-scene anti-aliasing by supersampling usually means that each full frame is rendered at double (2x) or quadruple (4x) the display resolution, and then down-sampled to match the display resolution. So a 2x FSAA would render 4 supersampled pixels for each single pixel of each frame. While rendering at larger resolutions will produce better results, more processor power is needed which can degrade performance and frame rate.

So obviously 16x is much more demanding than 4x, I decided to spell it out for if the captn reads this too.
