Hey, I've heard something about In vitro meat which is a laboratory grown meat: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_vitro_meat#Health I think that would be a very good progress of science, and I would definitely accept it, if it's healthy. icon_bigsmurf.gif

I definitely believe that you can live without meat, but if it's "fake" meat the I guess it's no harm done.

Actually it would be a great thing. If you are a vegetarian and have a carnivorous animal as a pet, then you will still have to feed him meat, and slaughterhouses will still have to exist right? But with fake meat this issue will be resolved too.

it is now appropriate to say....

"fresh vegetables give wisdom,
wisdom gives intelligence,
only intelligence breaks the chains of bondage,
this material bondage of flesh and blood,
that traps the true nature of the pure soul,
this is the only true path to freedom"

........so say the enlightened ones

I'm asking this mostly to berzerker because he is the scientist of the forum glasses11.gif but others can participate too.

Do you think that meat production is wasting resources? One of the main arguments for going vegetarian is saving the Earth... vegetarian sites claim that you need 7 pounds of grain to produce just 1 pound of meat. Is this true? icon_farao.gif I did a search to debunk this, and the only thing I found is a beef production website and they said that only 2.2 pounds of grain are required. So what's the truth?

If you really need a lot of grain to produce meat, they I guess meat prices should be very high. Surprisingly, some salamis are cheaper than soy meat. But I suspect that they may be something like 60% real meat or even lower, and the rest chemicals, mashed bones, claws, etc. But some salamis are incredibly expensive, they are like 5 times more expansive than the regular ones. I suspect that THESE are 100% real meat, but I don't know the truth for sure.

for this dear mi*a* we shall do a thought experiment. einstien also did such thought experiments often. if you dont belive me see thishttp://plato.stanford.edu/entries/thought-experiment. But i know you belive me, so thats for the non believers, like kangaroos down under.

ok getting back to topic, the thought experiment...."close your eyes and think you are a pig. ouch pig sounds nasty. how about a cute bunny rabbit icon_albino.gif ? you like that eh? ha ha i knew. you are spending a happy day on the farm hopping and jumpin and in between eating lot of grains and other green things to make you into a chubby plumpy bunny. now imagine how much you have to eat to make you a "chubby plumpy cunning bunny". All of this for what? just to put on a few pounds so that the evil fox can catch you and have you for BUNNY MEAT!?? how wasteful isint it? now if only the fox could eat what the bunny ate"

with this we shall stop our thought experiment . now you must be sporting a beaming smile since the truth is revealed!

I was actually thinking about the same thing but taking everything into consideration.
-Methane gas emitted by cows (source)
-deforestation as a result of farming (source)
-deforestation as a result of livestock (source)

BUT captn, I mean Master, oh wise One. icon_bigsmurf.gif If the animals ate only grains it was clearly decided that animal farming steals resources from humans, but some animals also eat grass, and we can't eat grass. So this is where the problem comes in, but it seems that 90% of soy production goes to animals, and soy has even more protein than meat. It seems that animals are still fed a lot of food that is suited for humans too.

Also, all animals need water right? That you can't debate.

i see you are in quite a dilema...so let me once again a just a little bit open some doors in your mind.

the sun is the most imp body in our solar system. it is the powerhouse of energy. on earth we are very dependent on the sun since the absence of which will result is death of species. This sun sends out photons which are captured by plants to convert that nuclear fusion energy in the core of the sun into stored energy in plants by photosynthesis

Humans cannot look at the sun and quench their thirst for hunger. thus plants fit in here as they transfer solar energy into a form of energy usable for us. Thus a veg diet will give you direct energy from the SUN itself!

Now when you eat the meat of other animals you are adding another level in the energy conversion process. sun->plant->animal->human. This seems to be clearly inefficient compared to sun->plant->human.

However when it comes to survival it seems humans have adapted. For example in cold contries like russia..etc where the sunlight is less and so when the primary source of energy for humans, ie plants are absent due to weather conditions, it seems one has to kill other animals to survive harsh winter. So you see your environment shapes your genes and you are pre disposed to a particular diet.

coming to where we are now...i think humans have progressed a lot since the cave man and so we now posses enough intelligence to make a choice. what is that choice? that i leave it you!

Also switching to fruits/vegetables isn't a perfect solution. Farming also devestates the environment by destroying so many trees.

A forest has far more trees than orange groves/vineyards/rice paddies...

take a look at the root cause of the problem. its not farming that is destroying the environment. its overpopulation and breeding senselessly. some thing has to be done to stop this. the gov could introduce of set of harsh rules where you pay the price in tax money or forced labour to do shit tasks like cleaning toilets and going down a coal mine or something and the offspring will become a property of the state military sent to dangerous zones. such a set of rules would bring peace and harmony back in the world and restore the earth to its true beauty.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic, but that certainly won't bring peace or prosperity.

over population makes the problem worst, no doubt about it, but farming is still a form of deforestation.

I do think that India has to do something about it's population though. I can't take all this Bollywood crap anymore

Well we are 6 billion but there are many more domestic animals that give food but have to be fed too.

Here's a counter of all the death that is happening in our peace loving world: http://profile.myspace.com/Modules/Applications/Pages/Canvas.aspx?appId=109014 icon_blackeye.gif

i convinced that is the only way. you cannot just start reproducing like mad.

you do realize more the population more the deforestation? if the population is under control the earths mechanisms will automatically compensate for deforestation.
