Regardless of the quality, the fucking mario universe is CACA. THERE IS NOTHING interesting about it. Yet they shovel that shit into a billion genre of games.
Why the fuck don't we have...a Max Payne kart racing game? There are so many other interesting characters out there. How is it that people still fucking enjoy this Mario Theme?
The only logical explications is that either nintendo has no original ideeas for the past 20 years and they said "fuck it, let's just stick mario everywhere" or people are simply retarded.
I'm willing to bet the second theory is right. Using Stumble Upon(something like Digg or Reddit), i often find web pages with Mario related crap.
Also, think about Zelda or Final Fantasy games. They are from the NES days and yet they remained in their own fucking genre. But noooo, we need that mother fucking italian plumber with the personality of puk's right testicle. Which is to say...very boring one.

I'm currently playing Prototype. And it's less of a prototype and more of a...hybrid. Eh eh, who can make puns like no other??
It's a cross between Assassin's Creed and...every super hero movie tie-in game. I'm actually surprised there is no movie coming out. The quality of it is EXACTLY like you'd expect from a movie game. Which is to say, pretty shitty BUT just enough to justify selling it.
So like in Assassin's Creed you have a free roaming city, except this time it's EVEN MORE boring and lifeless. I didn't think it was possible but they pulled it off. People KINDA look weird at you when you fall down from 30 meters and not get a scratch on but HOLY SHIT, if you punch a car then anarchy and hysteria fills their little heads.
You also have the very same looking fag with the very same looking cloak on his head. In fact, having never actually finished Assassin's Creed, i'm willing to bet that this is the sequel only played in the modern world and he somehow got super powers.
And just like....that's right, assassin's creed, you forgot things and need to unlock memories.
As for the parts that don't resemble AC, you have a mix between The Hulk, with smashing and throwing of things and some Spider man with climbing every building in sight.
You also unlock special powers by buying them from points made by doing damage to shit, nothing special.
The story and setting are no prototype of anything, they're as standard as you can get.
This Alex Mercer fagot is having a bad case of the "some people gave me immortality and super powers but...they didn't ask me first so i'm gonna kill them all because i'm a fucking cliche" so you just kill military people and some generic mutants.
The game made sure through various SUBTLE cinematics to show the military kill innocent people for no particular reason other than to "get what's coming to them".
The story is trying really hard to not be completely boring and bland in order to kinda give you a reason to kill people but fails like Mihai at not being gay. Ignore the story and just go from A to B and kill.

Probably why no one can relate to you is b/c Mario games always fly under the radar. It's not Galo where we see the product placement and advertisements everywhere, or Tom Clancy where Ubisoft invests the equivalent of a small country's GDP into those games.

I agree there are too many Mario games out there and the franchise has been flooded with games that are totally unrelated to the Mario universe (race and sports games more in particular, and the kids even have a dancing game). But they are usually of high quality (not too many Mario games out there with generally bad reviews), so I do not see this as a problem.
I care even less about the Star Wars universe, yet I thought KOTOR was nice.

I hated the timed power ups on Mario 64 it made the game feel less like Mario, Sunshine is gimmicky and missing power ups altogether and Galaxy is even more gimmicky but has power ups.
I think SMB3 and SMW are the best,combine those 2 and the core game play of Mario 64 and that make an awesome game.
As for to many Mario games no there are not enough traditional Mario games but there are to many Mario cameos.

So would you recommend Metroid Prime and Zelda the Windwaker or Ocarina of Time? I tried these a few times because they are all supposed to be very good but gave up within the first half hour (in the case of the Zelda games out of sheer boredom, in the case of Metroid out of annoyance with the controls). Should I try harder?

Well, you can consider it a quality stamp I guess. If they put the Mario name on, that warrants it is of high quality (until the franchise becomes ruined, as seems to be the case with Sonic and Donkey Kong, that is to say based on reviews I sometimes stumble across). I seldom see Mario games get bad reviews.
