But (speaking for myself) I refuse to spend time on obviously ludicrous conspiracy theories, and the 9/11 one is a good example. People who really believe that the US government orchestrated the WTC-bombings will not in a million year be convinced otherwise by valid arguments, so why bother? Going against the flow seems to be what motivates them in the first place.
You could argue that the big bang theory, the evolution theory and the relativity theory, for example, also seems ludicrous at first. But these theories are well thought out scientifically backed theories, widely carried by the scientific community, so there's no comparison.

The outstanding Democratic candidate was William Jennings Bryan. He had been the most eloquent advocate of free coinage of silver, unhampered by any considerations of banking or international business relations, of which he knew nothing.
Bryan was a supporter of popular democracy, a critic of banks and railroads, a leader of the silverite movement in the 1890s, and a peace advocate. Because of his faith in the goodness and rightness of the common people, he was called "The Great Commoner."

I bought a biography about Bryan recently, judging by other books I read earlier it seemed like an interesting fellow indeed. Once I get back to books about US history I'll read it, but in the last few months I've been focussing on stuff about the middle East, most recently Israel, so it will take a while, don't hold your breath for a response.
