Last article I read about a similar situation advised against this, because older PCs generally use a lot more power than modern PCs with the same power (which are quite cheap) and since these PCs are always on this could weigh in quite heavily, depending on local power rates of course.

I'll put them to sleep mode in that case

If that's possible at all with old PCs, this has been implemented really poorly in PCs for years. Anyway, you'd take these kind of measures either way, modern PCs generally do this better too.

Really, I thought the case does look pretty cool. Anyway I wanted something small and for the price this is amazing, it comes with a 450 W power supply. Others only come with a castrated 250W power supply, and others still boast a $200 price tag and come with no power supply!

I made the same mistake with my old PC. I bought it as a complete standard system, with a Geforce 6800 LE card, that came with a lousy 300 Watt PSU. It worked perfectly though, apparently the system just didn't need more and the PSU was perfectly tuned to the system.

When I needed a replacement PSU for a old PC I thought I might as well take this one out and replace it with a 450 Watt model, because that would allow a future graphics card update. I bought an Antec PSU, these have an excellent reputation, experts always tell you not to economise on the PSU.

A few years later I did upgrade the graphics card, to a Radeon X1950XT, which draws a lot more power but a 450 Watt PSU should easily be able to cut it. However, it didn't, the PC kept crashing when starting a game. This turned out to be caused by insufficient amperes on the 12V rails and I had to replace the PSU again (by a Corsair BTW, pretty neat, has worked perfectly so far).

So it is not merely the watts that count and you should take a look at the specs of the PSU in that case. Does it match the demands of the graphics card? For $50 for a case including a PSU you cannot expect much of the PSU I guess (my PSU alone was more expensive than that). Google tells that a GTX460 requires a 400W PSU with 24A at the 12V rail BTW.

How did you figure out it was as a result of the power supply? It doesn't seem at all obvious.

And I really can't be bothered to check the specs on the power supply. After all the time spent researching video cards, then processors, and now looking for the right mother board and RAM combo...it seems like so much work. In any case, I won't know until I get the cases.

It was either the graphics card or the PSU. I suspected the graphics card first of course, fortunately we have google nowadays. icon_bigsmurf.gif

What's the appeal of water cooling systems?

They are so expensive, it's unreal

To my knowledge these are used by heavy overclockers only.

[b]For Fuck's Sake[\b] puk,get yourself a decent (coolermaster/corsair, etc.) 550w psu+case for airflow.You will regret that bundled psu MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
That speaker image shows a 2.1 system.Where can one acquire a sub-$200 2.1 klipsch or other hi-fi speaker set?

Watercooling has the theoretical advantage of being silent (no fan needed) but this is completely negated by the fact that you need a pump instead, which is obviously not silent.

Why on earth would you want to use water cooling anyway? First RAID, now this, get down to earth please. alien.gif If you want to be 'cool' you just need anything with an apple logo nowadays. icon_cyclops_ani.gif

Never heard of actual leakages, but combining water with electronics seems like a bad idea in any case.

Well I have three extra cases here in case those turn out to be absolute crap. I am just not a fan of these massive cases cluttering my room. Oh, and I plan to hide the cases, so that's why I opted for smaller ones.

I bought the speakers a long time ago and they are kick ass

The pumps are so small that they generate almost no noise at all. However, a lot of them still have fans to move the heat from the radiators inside the case outwards. Still, these are nowhere near as loud as the CPU fans, which is generally what people mean.

Granted the RAID thing was a little naive, but I don't see why not if I can find a good second hand one for $40, which is more effective at overclocking, and quieter. Mind you, this is not the full kit which needs a radiator, a reservoir, a pump and several attachments running around $200. I need a fan for the CPU anyways

A shitty PSU is the worst thing u can do for your PC....get a Corsair{mine is over 2 yrs old and I've used my PC to death}.

Also remember that a good case is a 2-3 system investment, so don't be shy with them, I bought a HAF fulltower{friggin awesome} in jan, and my brother bought a $330 Lian Li...no regrets whatsoever.

Both of these cases have the HDD drive bays facing the side of the case so that big assed GFX cards don't get in the way.

Make sure you get dust filters though.

Jealousy - I wanna kill him and shoot him
He's a sucker - I'd like to execute him
Recruit him - put him in my school and school him
I said somethin simple, and I knew that I'd fool him
He's only mediocre, jealousy can't get with me
Hang up your clothes, cause jealousy ain't spent to me
He's just a monkey, ridin my back
In fact I kidnap, ramsack, hijack and backslap the fool..

I finally got the computer. I am testing it before I screw everything in.

My biggest concern is the power supply. Not so much that it will crash, but that I will have to admit defeat. According to this site, an almost identical setup will use only 332W at load and overclocking to 4.1 GHz

Dude this case is smaller than I thought. I thought I could leave one of the side panels open and let the CPU cooler hang out. But holy shit, even the video card won't fit in it. I seriously don't know what the PCI slots are for, ventilation?

Basically to make this thing fit in there I have to cut out the aluminum lining so my video card will fit there (not too hard seeing as how I cut off 1/4" from the width of this other case!) and take out the fan which will conflict with my HUGE CPU fan.

Another problem is that the PSU doesn't have enough cables, or rather, GPUs are getting too greedy and they want 2 6 pin connectors, or 4 of the old 4 pin connectors. WTF?!?! Luckily I have enough old PSUs so I can cut off some female wires from those and solder them to male wires from the 50,000+ fans I have and turn them into splitters.

The bitch of it is that with you computers you can hardly salvage any parts. All my optical drives are IDE, my hard drives are either too small or IDE (or both), all cases come with fans preinstalled, and ram gets outdated very quickly. Even the cables I have (IDE, VGA, RCA) are outdated.
