Never heard of the expansions of Half-Life? Opposing Force was pretty cool IMHO (Blue Shift is not worth your time however).

This page on steampowered.com is more helpful than I initially thought. This lists retail games the keys of which can be registered on Steam. Most of the retail games listed there appear to require Steam (not all of them though).

It seems Call of Duty 6 (i.e. Modern Warfare 2) will require Steam, but it is not quite sure to what extent (maybe only for the multiplayer component?).

Well, for those who do care: the steampowered forum confirms that there will be mandatory use of Steam for retail copies of the game. So his game goes onto the list in the start post.
Such shit makes PC gaming less and less attractive compared to console gaming: you still have better graphics and controls of course, but the advantage of a lower purchase price of the game on the PC is now taken away by the virtual impossibility to sell the PC game (if you do not like it after all or simply do not want to play it any more) as opposed to the console version. The price of a console game may therefore effectively be lower than the price of a PC game. Renting PC games is out of the question too and PC hardware probably was already more expensive.
One to avoid.

I don't mind steam to prevent piracy, I think it's a good idea, I just wish steam would stop telling me that I can't play my own games. This is like IKEA coming into your living room and telling you you can't sit on that couch.

I won't pay full price for any game unless I think it's a 9/10.

not to mention that you can loose your account pw. sounds stupid, but i am a good example of this. played hl2 back in the day, and that's about it. now i dug it out, and WTF? I can throw out my copy that i bought for real money. who the hell remembers some password from 8352792 years?
and basically the whole idea of "playing a single player game online" is just awful.

I do not like Steam but I must admit it does have decent options to retrace your account data. You can even retrace it with the serial of a game on the account. All that is required is that you can still access the email address attached to the account, so if you do not change your email address all the time you should be fine.

The e-mail address registered to that account is my old ISP provided one. So I learned the hard way never to use a 'free' e-mail which will get locked once you cancel the contract

It's also one that I rarely act on as most games fall short.
The only game I'm likely to pay full price for will be Mass Effect2.....after that it's anyone's guess.
I was thinking of buying a strong DX11 box, but then I thought WTF for...
We have enough PC power to run games twice as demanding as Crysis{single GPU}, yet most of them are maxable on my 4850.

My understanding with Steam is that if you pay for game and need to reformat or whatever, you can re-dl for free....?

That's true. But you'll need to login first so if you lost your account data and have no access to the email address of your account any more, you won't be able to do so.

What is my account data?
Isn't that just my email, login name and PW?

In what situation do you think "someone with a fucked net connection and no steam account" would be "just fucked"? Please elaborate!
