Well the government can do whatever it wants in Iran. If it wasn't for the HUGE crisis right now, they would've been in jail right now.
I think the government is in a tough position right now b/c the protests are so large, that meeting it with violence might actually further cement the movement.
If you had 10,000 protestors, you could torture a few thousand, and execute a few hundred, but what do you do when you have several 100,000 in your economic capital? If the ayetolla sends in the army, he better be ready to massacre a shit load of ppl. This might end up in a situation where u lose control of the military, and a reformer slips in there.
Also you need to remember that the Shah lost power exactly b/c he fired on his ppl. Gotta love that symbolism.

Is that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad character that bad? He doesn't seem to be that bad... but of course the US are expert at making boogeymen like Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein that are supposed to be evil tyrants that everyone should be afraid of, especially the peace loving people of the United States.
I have no idea what's going on in Iran, but it seems too often that governments from the Middle East are considered to be evil dictatorships and that freedom needs to be forced on them by the good guys from the US.
