Alex, let me revise my position. I think the people should be able to set policy however they see fit (within reason)
So if the people want to execute drug users, that's fine with me, as long as it's what they want. However, that's not what they want because
a)people are generally against executions
b)people realize that criminalizing drugs leads to problems.
Food, water and air are in a whole nother category all together. We firmly believe that the food we eat must be healthy, that's why we overwhelmingly would prefer to have restrictions on foods. But it also has to do with these massive companies which only care about profit (McDonalds).

The same goes for movies, probably even more so. So if games are attacked, you could counteract with "at least games do not glorify booze", the other relevant factors being more or less even.

Sure you could do that, but it doesn't address the fact that games are still violent.

Why do people drink (alcohol)?
I personally like the taste... bitter sweet goodness. When I'm drunk, or even just buzzed, I feel... enlightened? Seriously, I feel golden. It isn't the cheapest thing in the world, especially because I drink premium stuff only, none of that soapy massed produced buck a beer bull shit; I fucking despise light beer, it truely is a waste of money.
But cigarettes? They're fucking useless. I tried smoking. 99% of my time smoking, the smoke tasted like shit, and the only thing I could ever gain from it is a 10 minute body high and a head rush... 10 bucks to buy 25 smokes that can get my body high for 10 minutes, not even? Again, a waste of money.
Now weed, heh. It's cheaper than cigs, CAN last longer, and gets my body and mind high for at least 2 hours straight. Oh, and weed just makes beer even more appealing. I swear to satan, beer and weed go hand in hand. They were meant to compliment each other.
So yeah, the two best things in life are beer and weed... and coke

Why do people drink (alcohol)? It is expensive (in Western Europe, anyway, partly because it is heavily taxed), you can easily do without (unlike food), there is no natural urge (unlike sex), and what benefit does it offer? Maybe puk can shed some light on this?
This goes even more for smoking, it goes beyond me why anyone would even consider starting smoking.
Any thoughts / conspiracy theories?
What are you? 11 years old?

That's quite an interesting question you raise there: what's the nature of men? But I'd suggest you start a new thread for such philosophical questions rather than hijacking mine, which is about more mundane matters.
Don't misunderstand me: I am not trying to degrade you in any way (your input on this forum is invaluable, your post in this topic proves that beyond any doubt), merely preventing your ass from being banned here for off-topic posting.

don't think there's need to add anything to the alcohol-subject, so i type something considering smokeing, and why it is good. it's not just the "cool-factor".
when you give yourself some time, smokeing can put your mind at ease. helps you think about stuff more calmly, maybe because it gets your blood pressure down, don't know for sure. you give yourself a few minutes where you do absolutely nothing, so it's relaxing. you just feel ok.
and when you drink some, smokeing gets a LOT more fun. no kidding, honestly alcohol was the reason why i didn't stop smokeing when i wanted to. one cigarette after a beer is great, they certainly enchance each other.
and today.. i can say that i managed to stop smokeing. not that i know why, i just avoided to buy another pack. didn't light a single one for the past 3 weeks now. but the funny thing is, i don't feel any healthier. and the calling is still there even now. i expected something else when i thought about my future self 3-4 weeks ago.

I think beer makes cigars better because you no longer feel that shitty smoke taste in your mouth. Maybe it's just me, i dunno. Also could be because beer makes EVERYTHING better. Even shitty friends seem fun after 3 - 4 beers.

Berzerker I think I know why people do habits like drink alcohol/ coffee. I agree with the poster above that smoking may be just to relax, about alcohol/coffee it seems like you must LEARN the taste. If you taste these things for the first time they'll taste like shit so I think you need to get used to them to like 'em.

That's exactly why I do not understand why anyone would take this first step. It's so easy not to start smoking: it tastes like shit, it is unhealthy and it is expensive, what more reasons would you need?

But all the cool people are doing it!
And EVERYONE tells you NOT to do it. I see no point why a teenager would NOT start smoking.

Everyone tells you not to steal, to live healthy, to go to school etc too, yet most teenagers seem to follow this advice (to some extent). It is not like they do the opposite of what they are told to do all the time, so why this time?

So the Alez specimen is also smoking?
I too see no point in starting these habits. They're unhealthy (don't know about coffee though), taste like shit in the beginning, they're expensive and addictive.
I would rather buy some more good food instead of spending money on these habits. But to each his own I guess... Don't know why alcohol is so popular, maybe it gives you something to do just like smoking... like invite friends over for "a beer" and shit like that, it's probably just some "social" shit... I don't like it though.

Smoking is different because you can easily do it. The easier it is to do something forbidden the more likely it is to be done. It's also many adults smoke freely and they see nothing bad happens to them, so it's just some "bullshit" grown up rule to keep them down. In some cases you even see parents smoking and telling their kids not to do it.
Stealing shit and crap like that is not the same. Going to school is a must for most kids because you get report cards and shit so you can't hide it.
I think i've made myself clear. If not, let's rant some more.

I only KINDA smoke when i get a cigar in bars from a friend and act all smug and shit just to make fun of smokers and amuse my friends. I am by no means a smoker, i'm just not afraid of them or their apparently IMPOSSIBLE to escape addiction that so many pansies use as an excuse instead of admiting they're wusses.

This is the fucking GAYEST and SADDEST and most virgin post on this whole site. Berzerker, make a note of this. You might have to remember this for the records.

There is some truht to that yea because you can smoke a lot and still feel alright, but alcohol can cause some nasty side effects riht on the day of consumption. Ok smokeing has it too but the difference is clearly significant.
And about the bad taste: I heard it somewhere that when you drink something that... doesn't appeal to your likeing in the meaning of taste, your body produces some happyness-hormon shit or don't know what exaclty. whatever, the thing is, that your body tries to conpensate you by doing this. and then a thought suddenly occured me, that some people might get addicted to THAT shit instead of the drink itself.
