VideoGamesSuck.com :: View topic - Games you keep playing
There are some games that are hard to let go, that you keep playing until late at night knowing that you have go get up next day and that you should have been in bed hours ago to get sufficient sleep.
I have this almost exclusively with RPG's and adventures (particularly the Gothic series, but I remember the same with Outcast, The Longest Journey and a few more). The same could apply to RTS games but I hardly play those.
Oddly enough I hardly ever have this experience with pure FPS (the genre I play most). Most pure shooters (HL2, FEAR, etc) become a bit boring after half an hour or so, no matter how great the game is, so I play such games in short intervals. I could not imagine finishing a shooter in just a few sittings.
Any thoughts? I am talking singleplayer only BTW.

TBS - Turn Based Strategy.
Know that name, know the enemy. Every one i've played (and liked) i played for hours and hours. These games make the day turn into night and vice versa. They're fucking magicians.
Civilization 3 and 4, Disciples 2 with the gay elves expansion, heroes 2 and 3.
Also not exactly a TBS but king's bounty ate SHIT loads of my time, just like the ones above in my list.
RTS games don't do that because they have missions so after completing one you have a chance to stop. The only way you could waste plenty of hours is in the skirmish. I wasted the most in Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge because the game started moving like shit late in game. Also Age of Empires 1 and 2 when i filled the map with trees and had to have shitloads of workers.
RPG also stops in intensity. You always have those "back to the trader" or something slow moments when you could just save and exit and not feel like you're missing out on the action.

Silly missions do not necessarily make you quit, because completing them gets you a reward (XP, money) and probably also a next, more interesting, mission.
BTW "missing out on the action" does not seem a valid criterion anyway, because some games (adventures in particular) do not have any action whatsoever. I played The Longest Journey in much longer periods than any shooter, and it had no action at all.

I'm still playing FO3....I had to stop playing Stalker CS as it was taking too long.
I think RPG/FPS hybrids are the future, but hopefully we'll get one with really good weapons.
I'm also about to finish Far Cry "again".....although this time it's fully maxed and looks pretty damn good even today.
From my POV, the days of the mindless FPSer are over....I include games like COD4 and L4D in that description.

Berzerker, by ACTION i mean the "good parts" of the game. The interesting moments.
In longest journey you had highs and lows as well. Mostly when you couldn't find a solution and you kept wandering the same places over and over.
It doesn't need to have explosions to be engaging. I was wrong for using the term "action".
In a TBS the game NEVER has lows. It just gets more and more demanding of your attention.
In most FPS, even though you have guns and bangs, you get tired fast because it's the same. The "good parts" start to become the ones where you do anything other than mindlessly kill the same model enemy. I guess i'm analyzing too much. Never mind.
Pogma, i also stopped playing Clear Sky because it was kinda dragging on.
I LOVED the faction wars (or at least, the theory of it, not the broken reality) and when i went in red forest i just didn't care anymore, it's not a story driven game, you just play for The Zone.
I'm currently playing Fallout 3 but i dunno, the world looks a million times better than Stalker yet it's such a generic RPG that you can ignore the date and imagine playing any other medieval game with a lot of fancy bows. The gameplay is painfully bland. You need mods real bad.
Bethseda should just make maps for Stalker but not touch anything else, that fucking copy paste company.

I'm enjoying the world and the exploring....and yes, I'd prefer better weapons etc, but that seems to be the nature of most games, they get a few parts right, but stuff up other elements of it.
I also don't normally play RPG style of games, but as I said, I think these hybrids are the future, but they need to take the combat and weapons seriously....for example, how do I steady FO3's sniper rifle?????......I'd have more luck guessing where my target was than using the scope, lol.

Ya I do that too, and it is just surreal.
The only problem with Far Cry is that it's not very forgiving, so you set up an ambush, and everything is going swimingly, then u step on a twig, and 50 mercenaries start firing in your direction
