What the story is about and it's setting etc....plus, for reasons I can't understand, some people think having to pick locks with bobby pins is meaningful RPG action.

Yeah I get you. A post nuclear world? Sounds exciting... but the game is just unimpressive when you actually get to play it.
I was all hyped-up too about the game when I saw the video on Youtube when you blow up Megaton or whatever the name of that village was. Now that's impressive... sadly the game wasn't as good in the rest.
Stalker (with all it's annoying bugs and huge PC resource demands) > Fallout 3.

This game mainly needs better graphics....even Bioshock pisses over it.
I'm still playing it, but some donkey's have rated this game as 100/100 and called it one of the finest games of it's generation.......but the graphics and the console limitations make those type of statements obvious pay offs.
I wonder if I'll have to buy a new GPU for the next 4yrs....I max everything that comes out at 1920x1200.

So I went to Megaton, murdered a few people behind closed doors, returned, planted the detonation device and then murdered the black sheriff and took his gun hehehehhehe.
This would be a bullshit game without VATS......consider the smooth and slick gunplay in Fear2 and then compare it to this console diseased crap.
I wonder how much longer we have to suffer this shit.

I'm still playing it.....it's a massive game which allows me the freedom to befriend and then betray and kill for a few spare rounds of ammo, HAHAHAHAHAHAAA.
The FPSer part of this is much better than Mass Effect, but that's an easy feat....so as I've said, without VATS, this game would be just okay at best.....you'd be forever wishing for better more solid moving weapons, but VATS is there to make up for it.

Do you understand (and if so would you care to explain) why they designed the game in such a way that you need VATS to begin with? I have not played the game yet but the whole concept of VATS sounds silly. No other FPS or RPG does seem to need such a concept.

The review is fine but does not seem to answer the question.
Normally in shooters, shooting is simple. Now in FO3 Bethesda seemed to have created a problem (making shooting troublesome) and solved that with VATS. That's clear. What I do not understand is why they choose to create the problem in the first place, and I hoped you would have some ideas on this.

No, it is on my long list of games to get after I get a new PC (only next year I guess, unless the current one will not run Stalker and Gothc 3; it ran Bioshock and Timeshift pretty well however).
Does Mass Effect have a similar system then?

Mass Effects RPG part is very polished and is the reason I like the game....but the FPSer part is bad, it suffers the same type of console clunkyness as FO3 but it doesn't have a VATS to make up for it......my point was that if you played and liked ME, you should like FO3 as it's strong on RPG and story, and better on FPSer.
Btw, if you can run Bioshock, you should be fine for ME.....and the HQ cutscenes won't be affected by a underpowered PC anyway.

Um what the hell are you talking about? Did you play the first two games? The V.A.T.S. was even better back then because you could groin shot a child and kill him

So it is an historic feature, that explains it all I guess.
And no, I have not played the first 2 games so I could not tell. I was completely fed up with top-down view after having played Total Annihilation and Planescape Torment and avoided any game with such settings since then.

I've tried Fallout 1 and 2 and I don't like neither, they are from the point in which video games were evolving from VGA (Doom, Quake, ...) graphics to more advanced and less "cartoonish" (Starcraft, Half-Life, ...) and some of them like Terminal Velocity or Fallout 1 and 2, seem aborted crap to me.
Anyway, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Bioshock and Red Alert 3 are fucking ports from XBOX360, intented to be played from 3 meters (about 10 feet, if there is anyone still using that kind of obsolete units) away in a couch in the living room, by a 14 years old preadolescent who listen to The Offspring, Sum 41, Green Day and Coldplay. So to anyone playing videogames for 15-20 years, when faced with a game's interface like this:
that is mentioned as a "very good game" apparently by everyone, you only get killer instincts.

I heard about it first here in another post from you. Is this a personal favorite of yours or is this generally considered a classic, one that I have missed all those years?

I prefer Descent than Terminal Velocity, but I growed up with VGA graphics so maybe I've idealized them like who idealize Ford Mustangs and lonely roads.
