It's funny, I had a lot of problems with Bioshock, but ultimately, the voice acting was so good that it became one of my favorite games. Crysis is also kick ass, but never played Mass Effect.

IMO, Crysis is only worth it for the first 2/3 or 3/4's cause the last part is a nonsense all over the place.
Bioshock and ME are so different to typical FPSers that I found myself drawn to them.

Ya I didn't like the aliens either, it's more fun to kill Koreans.
Bioshock is a case where the whole is better than the sum of its parts
I found the shooting wasn't satisfying, the story was difficult to follow, the enemy wasn't that smart, and there wasn't too much variation in the enemies. However, I really really liked the voice acting, especially Andrew Ryan, so I got sucked into it.

I agree that the shooting part wasn't it's strength, but overall it had so much more than the typical game that it was worthwhile to play.

Ya I agree, the strengths in Bioshock far outweighed the weaknesses.
I loved the part where Andrew Ryan loses it:

Why was bioshock so popular?
I gave it about 2 hours and I was bored to tears.
Best thing I played all year... was probably one of the flash games on kongregate.
PC gaming was a joke this year.

I simply liked how different it was, I also liked torching and electrocuting people/the enemies, LOL.

for me it was the voice acting that did it, everything else was meh'
-the gunplay wasn't that great
-the story was hard to follow and it didn't unfold the way it was supposed to (according to the wiki article)
-the plasmids were useless except for the electric one
-half way through the enemies magically get tougher (in other words, the guns all of a sudden feel weeker)

Fight me all you want, but I say Mass Effect is better because it's more original and diverse than Crysis. Don't get me wrong, I like Crysis too, but aside from the suit and the graphics there's nothing else that's really innovative about it. To me Mass Effect felt like something new, Crysis felt just like a very good FPS.
