While they're not the newest of game titles, having semi-recently gotten a 360 I've been playing LAN games of various FPS games. Being a longtime high level wolfenstein: ET and Quake 3 player, however, I really can't see how the fuck these games get so much reknown as multiplayer games:
CoD4
Spammy-tastic gameplay, with pretty much every gun having the precision of the drunk missile launcher from Rise of the Triad. The common console babby or fps newfag will claim that CoD4's multiplayer is "deep", though apparently this is used in the same context as people who consider tic-tac-toe an epic battle of wits.
Too bad that the first fucking time I played the game - matched up against people with a 40-ish trueskill rank - I came second just by running around spamfiring and camping like a fucking noob gibbon. Deep indeed.
Halo 3
Similarly spammy gameplay, but now with the benefit of the way that it takes roughly five hundred shots from any gun to actually kill somebody and every non-sniper gun has the accuracy of the SMG from half life 2; however, since your character moves with the collective speed of a dead slug with the staggers it generally leads to an even playing field between the dumbest of noobs and the longest playing of stinky faggots.
Boils down to whoring power weapons and hearing 12 year olds bitch about your overuse of the sniper rifle on the VOIP. Guh?
The worst part about both games is that even fucking Counterstrike requires more skill than either of them. This is good for the average console babby or noobzooka who would be lucky to even get a single kill in a whole game of Q3RA, but considerably disconcerning for somebody who actually likes games to have ... any challenge whatsoever. Gayness.

Well I never liked multiplayer games, mostly b/c I get my ass handed to me. All I fucking ever hear is some dipshit designer telling me how the players will be "leveled up" against similar oponents, then I get in the game, and it's literally the ass rape of the century. Am I really that bad? Am I the worst player in history? Or maybe, Activision licks my balls, and their levelling system is complete ass.
But this is besides the point, the reason multiplayer sucks is b/c sites like Gametrailers basically grade games on two things: whether the game has multiplayer or not. Those morons claim that you get more value out of the game, but essentially what it is is a gimmick meant to increase it's appeal, like the special features on a DVD, it adds no real value to the package. And of course, developers will rush to incorporate this.
And you can really feel the pinch, cuz games like Burnout have dropped split screen in favour of multiplayer. I'd much rather play with my friends then some screeching voice from Japan. Or look at COD4. They probably spent more time on the online than on the campaign. And the split screen was an after thought, you can't even add bots
In conclussion online multiplayer is overrated. And gamespot takes it up the ass

They focus on multiplayer because you need a GREAT game to reach the single player lenght of more than 5-10 hours and not being a repetitive shit. By the way they can be much more cheap in the AI and primary exploit the need of feel "1337" the underage preadolescents need so badly and get filled mastering a vg with a dedicated 24h/7d so they can kill you before you kill them.
