have both contra games on the original gameboy and they're awesome. super hard though. the first is amazing and the second (alien wars) is basically "a portable apocalypse in your pocket".
gameboys (gb-gbc-gba) are the only consoles worthy of playing i think. have a cartridge that plays nes roms on tha gba so I can play nes contra too. yaaay!
