VideoGamesSuck.com :: View topic - Will Wasteland 2 be great?
I had never heard of Wasteland until Suislide posted about this game. I love Fallout (and have recently started playing Fallout 1, which Brian Fargo (Wasteland 2 game director/creator) directed or made or whatever. It looks REALLY good. I don't know how turn-based combat can match up with modern gaming, but if it does work then the overall game looks like Game of the Year material. Fargo seems like someone who deserves a lot more recognition, but like a lot of the smarter people in so many fields, maybe he was overshadowed by the simplistic games of EA, etc. because they sold better.
So I'm wondering from people who know Wasteland, will this game hold up in 2012 (or whenever it is finished, presumably within the next few years)? What about the turn-based style? I'm trying to play Fallout but the tediuosness of just getting out of the cave in the beginning is ridiculous.

Fallout 1 and 2 are great games. I played them more than 10 years ago, but recently I bought the Fallout Trilogy (featuring 1, 2 and Tactics) Awesome dialogues, quests, locations, MUSIC... It's really nice. The first one starts a litle slow as you're pretty weak. But later when you become moderately powerful, it becomes really enjoyable. I played it through two times.
First I chose Gifted for more attribute points and Fast or Quck Shot or I don't know the name, that lowered all my ranged attacks AP cost by one. With agility of 9 (later it became 10) and the upgraded plasma rifle, I was able to perform 5 single shot per round.
The second time I was a sniper which was even more enjoyable as I shot the enemies in the eye and one bullet was enough for everyone, even power armored guys.
In Fallout 2 I made the perfect character by the end of the game.
With proper equipment, some perks and being Gifted, my Charisma and Intelligence were 8 my Luck , Perception and Agility was 10, but my Endurance and Strengh was only 4 (but power armor raised it a bit). If I remember correctly. I was not able to use heavier rifles because of my low Strengh but I was an excelent sharpshooter and loved the hell out of my Upgraded Magnum revolver in close combat and the Scoped Hunting Rifle for further targets. I had a knack for science and social interaction (both are very useful), and nobody spotted me while I sneaked through.
And of course Small Guns were my favourite.
In Fallout 1 and 2 the skills and Attributes were actually made a difference. Perception helped you shoot better. And with low intelligence you were like a kid with down syndrome when it came to dialogues (although you should have at least 6). There were more perks and they were a lot witty too.
I remember with such low endurance, I could only become a porn star in New Reno when I took up the Kama Sutra Master perk.
Fallout 3 had none of those. You could be a sharpshooter even if your endurance was 1. That's retarded.

Well I finally got into the game after watching some "Let's Play" videos on YouTube.
So far I'm actually surprisingly entertained. Surprising because I thought the game was too primitive to be entertaining even with a good story but once I got the general gameplay down it's still pretty good.
You're right about the music. It's really good. No surprise that they used some of the same music and sounds in both Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
I'm not far enough along to comment further (I just left Shady Sands for Junktown and saved Mayor Killian from assassination by Gizmo).
It would be nice to see Fallout 1 and 2 remade. I still prefer first-person though becauuse I feel third-person or top-down limits immersion.
It's good to finally see what I had only read about. I was hooked by Fallout 3's world and story and have read a lot about Fallout 1 and 2 so its definitely exciting.

junktown's still the beginning of the game. later it'll be much more amazing as you get to different places and become stronger and shit'll get real.
fallout 1 is an awesome game on it's own. while the second one's basically the same good stuff only with more everything. in terms of choices and character advancement, equipment, places, teammates... i'm sure you'll have a blast with that one too if not an even bigger one.
btw it's nice how you got into the game still despite it's made in 97.
pogma could adopt this approach too.

This 2 part video is a good review of the games, beginning with Wasteland and proceeding through Fallout 3 (no discussion of New Vegas).
Wasteland 2 looks like it will be very interesting considering that Wasteland was made in 1988 lol. I thought it was made JUST before Fallout 1, not 9 YEARS before.

pogma's in the habit of rejecting old shit and BBB shit, that's why I don't own any indie games, even if they're 99c.
I want games to develop along the lines of Skyrim, so for example, we would now expect that FO4 should be a significant leap over the lukewarm FONVegas from a technical POV.
Don't forget that Skyrim also comes with Steam Workshop, which is easily one of the greatest innovations in gaming......both FO3/NV modding have been hit and miss for me, but all Skyrim mods are point and click.

Fallout 4 will probably be 10/10 GOTY or biggest consolized, dumbed-down, childish piece of garbage ever. One of those will happen.
Given how unfulfilling the quests in Skyrim are ("Congratulations, you're the Arch-Mage!" "Congratulations, you're head of the Dark Brotherhood!") I fear that Fallout 4 will be even worse.
I still like Skyrim but the quests were pretty much retarded and could have been written in 5 minutes by a teenager.

No question that some of the quests sucked, and I especially agree regarding your rise, plus, they need to make the game more aware of what you've done, for example, after I killed the DH, silly ole maven blackbriar still spoke of them as being players, but I killed them all as the quest sucked.
Even though F03 is still a great game, there's no question that we've seen ongoing improvements across NV and Skyrim, and now it's time to improve the questing...

All this thread reminded me of the fist two Fallout games that I just gave in the urge to play them again. Now I'm finished with the first one which was awesome although not too long, just enough for me to get in the game again and build up my interest for the real deal which is Fallout 2.
That game is super awesome. There are tons of choices to make. Not just good or bad, but more and some quests are even coming up or getting blocked depending on your choices. And the character progression is awesome.
Being a badass SNIPER (but still with the charm and the IQ) is great with the following stats (with all the upgrades).
S - 6
P - 8 (10 with Sharpshooter perk)
E - 6
C - 8
I - 8
A - 10
L - 10
With the Scoped Hunting Rifle and the Magnum (speed loadered) you get quite early in the game you own every single ass on your own.
So I tried something different this time. The best thing in this game that it let's you be any kind of character you like and still prevail if you play your cards right (unlike in F3). So I chose to build a spyish ninja ( kinda like Adam Jensen with a knack of social and science skills) this time.
S - 6
P - 6
E - 6
C - 10
I - 10
A - 10
L - 6
Just look at that clean layout of stats it's just pleasing to the eye. Got the One Handed trait (besides Gifted of course) so my my tagged skills are Unarmed, Throwing and Sneak. But of course built up my Speech and Lockpick too. It's so cool that without any weapon (that means no Knuckles or Powefists) I get different unarmed attacks as depending on level and skill. They have different AP costs and some gives higher crit chance and/or armor piercing capabilities and such. But I'm using a power fist right now in one weapon slot and my kicks/throwing weapons for the other one. It's great that close combat is much more developed and useful in this game than it was in F3 (there are even several quests requiering close combat abilities). With Silent Running and Silent Death, I take down my enemies wih ease as VATS shows body parts with unarmed too (including the eye and groin). That is just as if not more deserved for unarmed combat then ranged while in F3 the VATS just showed the whole body for close combat. Which was dumb and totally inlogical since disarming opponents, breaking their limbs, knocking them unconcius is much more reserved to HtH Combat in my opinion.
And with HtH Evade I have more AC in a Bridgekeeper Robe than any other char in Mark II Power Armor. Can't wait to get the Slayer perk to get all my attacks go full critical (unlike Sniper, this does not depend on Luck stat at all). and with Throwing tagged (the bonus from the One Hander trait applies here too) I can back up my attacks with various grenades and other throwing weapons when dealing with crowds.
This game is awesome and is just more and in quite a few ways a lot meaner than F3. The Brotherhood are not the good shiny knights of justice as they're portrayed in F3 and you can see the rising of the Enclave too. The voice acting is simply the best (there's Harold and geezus the Enclave Sarge is hilarious) and great, useful NPC-s that are well developed. Sulik the spirit consulting niggerish tribal, Marcus the super mutant sheriff, Myron the whoremonger, self proclaimed genius drug inventer and many others, robot with different brains, melee fighter robodogs, you can even have an intelligent, cloaked deathclaw as a follower. Sounds silly but all just fits here. The world are a bit crazier and more entertaining than how it was in the third game. More funny (morbid) stuff, different places and they are actually tied to each other in some way, more equipment that validates your (again more) skills and you don't feel like the game is forcing your hand when you develop your character.
It's just awesome.
And there are several mods and unoffical patches too but I'm just using the wide screen - high res mod.
