IMO it doesn't make sense to pay the premium,for an i7/x6 unless you're running multiple monster gfx cards(gtx 4/580 or multiple 5970's)
you dont need a i7 to run a monster gfx card, it has nothing to do with i7s.

I have noticed that some of the pre built PCs are pretty cheap. Here is one I was considering purchasing as it seems cheaper than if I built it myself. Also, I would like to buy 3-4 of these so I can set up LAN gaming.

I gave up by the time I got to NVIDIA. I can't figure out why some of the HD5xxx cards are more expensive than the HD6xxx cards.
It seems like the GTX460 is about the same price as the HD5770 but performs much better, so I might get three of those (probably second hand off of craig's list) and then I need a slightly better one for my main computer, like a GTX580 or HD5970.
And then for CPU I'll go with Q8300 (can't find Q6600), for hard drive I'll probably go RAID1 with 2x500GB HDD ($100), Intel DG43GT Motherboard ($106) but I can't figure out why all the socket 775 mobos don't support DDR3.
How is this for a start? Is it really bad, or just bad?

I'd go for AMD, it'll save quite some money on the mobo.
Generally for private purposes RAID creates more problems than it solves, and why such relatively small discs? It would seem preferable to buy just 1 HDD and backup to an external HDD (I bought an external 1.5TB HDD 1 year ago for 120 euro, these come with USB3 now and probably lower prices too), having the data backuped off your machine seems preferable anyway.
GTX 460 seems like a fine choice to me.

It's unbelievable how many mobos don't have S/PDIF !

You can also forget all the AA/AF and 3D bullshit and you'll see that a mid-range card gives incredible performance with Crysis, see for example my experience here. That's also a good argument. It's a shame i don't have some basis of comparison. All I got is youtube videos. I tried out Crysis on my Penthium 4 and ATI X1600 and it looks like shit

6870 should do 1080p 4xaa+16xaf on High with Crysis.....4xaa does sharpen the game quite a bit, but my 4850 can't maintain playable frames, but the 6870 is probably 110-130% faster.
Btw, Warhead is the best looking game and has some beautiful environments plus heaps of frozen lakes/ice etc, which no game to date can emulate.
