I stopped giving a shit long ago. Most people won't mind, anyway, unless the phone companies gaining control of the Internet means that the already collossal outflow of pornographic material will be slowed at any significant rate. Computers are more or less fucking entertainment systems for most people these days; nobody will care if the last frontier of free speech finally gets Sovietized, so long as they've got a near endless supply of naked women pictures and orgy videos to gawk at.

Well its a fine balance... you don't want the government controlling the net but you also don't want the telcos and cable providers controlling the net. I think we need government regulation to catalyze competition, but not EVER touch actual content.
The fucked up thing is ISPs do NOT currently have true common carrier status (I was surprised to learn this) although in most cases they cannot be held liable as long as they follow certain laws like the DMCA. That actually makes it worse in terms of consumer rights and free speech. As of now they can still fuck with content and are given a free pass when it comes to liability in many cases.
We need network neutrality. If we don't get it the Internet will eventually run into problems. It may not happen overnight but it could easily degenerate.
