I installed the xonar DG and tried using the 3.5mm jacks on it, but based off only testing a few files it sounds the same as coaxial...I also tried to use the optical out on the DG but couldn't get sound.
The testing procedure is a PITA as I have to reboot and change the onboard enable/disable depending on what I'm trying to use.
My brother has the z2300+xonar DG and my z5500's with coaxial out from mobo kicks the crap out of it.
One problem I'm having using coaxial is only stereo sound....how do I get 5.1?....I have heaps of 5.1 HD files.
Same here. My X-Fi has a problem with outputting 5.1 through optical and coaxial. It can only do stereo. Otherwise, analog works fine.

Can the xonar+ 3.5mm decode a HD rips DTS track, or is it converted to DD?

dnt know abt these consumer cards. According to the specs here the SPDIF should output 5.1 dts. maybe you need to match the sample rate for the audio to be audible. eg if your card is set to 44khz and you play a 96khz no sound will be generated, so try to match the sample rates.

optical technically is slightly better than coaxial or spdif, there is no reason why it should not give you 5.1.

Thing is, using coaxial, a HD rip with 640k 6channel ac3 sounds fine and is pumping every speaker{using VLC}, but when I try my 1080i HD files with 384k 5.1 ac3, they suck hard, "but" sound awesome in either VLC or WMP as stereo.....see my problem, I know I can get 5.1 sounding good, but not with some files that are basically the same spec...
