So I played Minerva's Den once for the review, then once again on Hard and last night I finished it again on Easy and here's my two cents on how a game like Bioshock should work
I don't think it should be played on Hard. It's not like FEAR 1 where the firefights are so visceral and you can use reflex mode. On easy I was so much more relaxed and much more likely to use my plasmids as I know the loot will give me enough money to buy more EVE. Furthermore, I was more likely to jump in the middle of all the splicers and go ape shit
On hard it is so frustrating when three bullets drain all your health and you almost always run out of EVE. Therefore, you don't really use plasmids and instead set up a trap in a corner and just try to survive.
I sure hope in Bioshock infinite they address this. Instead of making the firfights harder, I think they should make them longer but still give the same loot so I am still assured to get my EVE and med kits back.

How do you properly make a game harder?
The only game I really liked playing on hard were the thief games, there you didn't get more opponents, more difficult opponents or more damage per hit, but more (complicated) objectives and restrictions to the methods of reaching them (particularly not being allowed to kill anyone). But that takes more time to program of course so you are not going to see this in Half-Life 3.

Take MGS2: Sons of Liberty. On harder settings getting caught usually resulted in death, so you had to be more careful, also firefights were more tense as it was generally one shot kill and u had no rations, but it had the static camera with the best angle, and the controls were very tight, unlike your 3d camera angles now which are a disaster.
Crysis was cool too, on the hardest setting they start talking in Korean.

I know in bad company 1, there's a setting to make the enemies speak in their native tounge. This gives the game added difficulty(unless you understand russian)and combined with hard difficulty makes it frustrating to track their announced tactics(esp. On the level Crash and Grab)
Hard mode,is actually a test of skill and not temper.

News about bioshock here. It does not seem to be particularly good news though.

When I first played Bioshock1, I kind of liked it, didn't mind the GFX and tolerated the clunky assed controls, but if any game is released in that state again, I'd reject it's ass, just as I rejected Bioshock2 after a few minutes simply for dumbing down the GFX.
