The idea seems to be that he must be there at night at the reception for in case anyone shows up. This is always the case with receptions. This means he just has to be on stand-by, and playing a game (or reading a book) while waiting would seem perfectly normal, as long as it is dropped instantly once a customer shows up.

actually i found it useful to read a book or play a GBA, that is how i maintain my awareness at night (or i'll just browse the net sometimes). i mean usually nothing ever happens from 01-04 (at least in weekdays) and things can get really quiet. if i just stare blankly at the wall in front of me, i'll just fall asleep not to mention that time will be slow as fuck. you're brain remains in a more active state while reading or playing so if someone pops up from nowhere you can attend to the matter with a fresh mind.
of course in midday it's a different matter. then there's no need for methods like that.
