The sports most people are interested in is the most popular sports, sounds logical to me. AFAIK no sport comes close to football so this is the No 1 sport, like it or not.
if you define popularity by something having a following due to large numbers its ok with me, but that doesnt make it "No 1 sport". By assuming its a No1Sport because many people like it never makes it No1, just what majority of dumb people like you like to agree up on. However thats where you and i differ, if i dont think its number1, its not to me, no matter even if the majority of idiots like it.
So No 1 sport is now defined as the sport you like best.
