EA seems to export the hassles of PC gaming to the consoles: see here.
It seems you have to register your game and can do this only once, just as with Steam / Ubi-DRM, only this seems to apply to multiplayer only and this system seems targeted mainly at second hand games.
Anything that makes console games more of a hassle is good I guess, so this may be good news.
It's funny too because EA is known to keep their online servers open for really short periods after release so if you play online you'll have to buy the latest version of the same stupid game anyway.
