this will be thrilling news for some of my fav fans here, nevertheless i thought i would mention this incident.

It was a while since i explored certain alternative techniques to run certain applications, the last time i did this was perhaps 10years back. Sure in those days i had fullfledged antivirus etc, however that is something i dont ever use now, because i dont venture into the dangerous world of torrents.

But alas in my greed to execute a certain application using certain scientific techniques, i ended up having Win32:Rootkit-gen on my pc. luckily i have several OS's on my pc so only the gaming one was affected (how clever!!)

After downloading the app from torrents and executing a nifty patch, it was only 2 hours since i had gone out to the gym and came back. i checked my email, there where like 6 emails. out of them 5 where about games purchased thru steam. In that 5 only 1 was accepted by my card and the other 4 games where rejected. The 6th email was a notification mesg from steam informing me about my email being changed. thats when it hit me. i was like FUCK-FUCK-FUCK!!! i knew exactly what happened. i immediately followed the steps at steam to report hijacked account.

So this is what could have happened
1. the hijacker got my steam acc/pass from the root virus. i had selected the option to save password in the steam client, so this was probably exploited, i not sure how else it would be possible. since the last time i played steam was 4-5months back. Or perhaps some1 from vgs like puk did this for islamic vengeance.

2. he then purchased eve online and gifted it to myself. played it for 7minutes. i dont know if puk likes to play eve.

3. he then tried to purchase other games, but they where all rejected

4. he then changed my email, so that any purchase or notification message would be rerouted.

5. the passwd was also changed

While i have got the refund from stream and things are back to normal, my pc now has the shitty anti-virus trial versions, i am actually disappointed with the security measures that steam technology has in place.

Ofcourse this would not have happened had i not deviated from my safe routine of obtaining the exe like i do usually or had a stupid anti-virus running in the background wasting my cpu time.

anyways the patch worked and am enjoying the application

And he could pay this with your money how? Don't you need any passwords or security codes or whatever to make online transactions? I'm sure I do.

WTF, you are the one to blame here, not Steam. You fucked up, they inform you of it and they clean up your mess, and now you come blaming them?! icon_monkey.gif

ofcourse, for credit card you need to enter password before purcahse. while for the other games he tried to purchase, it was declined rightly so, but i dont understand how he was able to purchase eve online. it was not papal because i dont use it for steam, so it has to be the card. the only difference is that in the case of eve, it was purchased as a gift.

sure i fucked up, but how does a virus pick up the steam account and password so easily?? it means the password is NOT encrypted and placed in some file some where which the virus knew where to look.

A rootkit can basically do anything, maybe it logged your keystrokes somehow? It could access Steam simply by firing it up (because the password was filled out automatically), but in order to change your settings it had to fill out the old one, that's true.

like i said before i hadn't logged into steam for the last 3-4 months, so its not via keystroke.

that seems more likely.
