VGS review excerpt.....The cars handle terribly. I guess EA thinks that "ultimate driving experience" consists of constantly trying to keep your car from going sideways. Even the weakest of the weakest cars oversteer as if they were 1000hp monsters. Even with analogue acceleration and breaking, courtesy of 360 controller, even at 10% acceleration your cars will burnout and wheelspin as if they were driving on molten lard.
Whilst I experienced this with the demo, I bought the retail DVD, patched to v1.02, and installed Logitech's gaming software pack v5.08 to properly* operate my Logitech DFGT wheel, and the handling, braking and acceleration are excellent.
The cars no longer oversteer and lurch all the time, that's completely gone, as such, this game is putting a freakin huge smile on my face as the driving experience is the most fun I'ever had, and I've only got a handful of the best cars as yet.
Driving a 600hp Mustang GT at Nurburgring was brilliant, and the Ford GT will most likely be a winner as well.
I don't give a shit about the career mode, or online MP, granted you can play MP and increase your points and cash.
I think this game has serious potential for old fashioned fun...I can't fucking wait to unlock everything.
* the wheel needs to be set to 900deg+ some other bullshit that totally eliminates the fucked up handling.
Shift makes GRID look outdated and bare bones, and I can't set my wheel up properly for GRID, nor could I ever get my 360 controller to work either.
I'm really quite shocked at the transformation, and as usual, the dummies only give us slow assed cars in the demo, so it's hard to get excited about some POS doing 180kph....I did 290kph in the Mustang GT, and I suspect many of the Tier 4 cars will do 300+.
Here's the exact wheel I bought....there's some HQ pics in there.

This is a must racing game IMO, I've had a chance to drive some of the Tier4 cars and can't believe how good they are and how superbly they work with my wheel.
Zonda R....yeah, fuck yeah!!!!!!!!!!
This game is one of the biggest surprises in gaming for me.....but I'm more concerned with the cars and the tracks, the career mode isn't terrible, but for example, I haven't played a single race in GTR EVO's career mode, it's all been MP and me chasing my lap times.

You can also buy and upgrade heaps of cars, for example, I turned a stock Lambo with 630BHP to 970BHP, and also did similar to a BMWM3....the performance difference is huge as well.

There are 3 levels of performance....
stock
level 2-3 which can include NOS
Works
Works is the real animal, but not all cars are slated for a works conversion, and you must also upgraded to L3 fully before purchasing the works conversion.
The Lambo is intense as it gets, I'm literally getting pains in my sides and my stomach trying to drive this thing for any extended period, ie, it's so fast and carries so much corner speed, your force feedback is always loaded on the wheel.
That being the case, it can be quite pleasant driving some of the slower cars as they don't require the constant input.
Anyway, I've got 2 Zonda's, 2-3 Lambo's, 2 Astons, 3 Porsches, The Mac F1, heaps of yank tanks, + I've still got to earn more cash to buy the Coniseg and the Bugatti.
If you like the thrill of driving, then this game is a must buy, but as I said, do get a wheel though.
If you've never used a wheel before, you'll get a huge surprise when you try it with Shift, between the wheels full range of movement and superb FFB, you'll have a blast.
In AUD.
Logitech
MOMO...$99
DFpro....$114
DFGT....$114.....I have this one, and have no regrets...it also has 900deg
G25......$280
G27.....$420

I also keep winning award cars for leveling up, I just got the incredible BMW M3 GTR, a real handling machine.
This game rates cars numerically, so as good as the BMW M3 is, the Zonda F is 17{BMW 15} and the Zonda R is 20.5.
Even the lower rated cars are fun to drive, and as I've mentioned, the faster cars are like an aerobics workout, so it can be quite a relief to drive an Aston Martin rated at 9 or 12.

Don't buy without a wheel, that's crazy.

I'm going to kind of take back some of what I said about SHIFT, ie, the steering isn't that good standard, but if you mod it, it improves quite a bit.
Some people love it, but I think GTR Evo+mods is the best, and works flawlessly with my DFGT.

Yes, but some people have a strict criteria that steering wheel performance makes or breaks a game{as I do}, so it needs to perform well with a wheel for me to care.
Despite F1 2010 being a mix of sim/arcade, it works sensationally well with my wheel and presumably any wheel, so why should I expect less from a game like shift, especially when GRT2 nailed steering wheel precision back in 2006 and on a much smaller budget at a time when racing wheels weren't as common...?
FYI, I think most games are crap, so when a game/series comes along that is basically good all over the place, I'm more than happy to discuss it and suggest someone buy it, as such, you'll often see me discuss GTR Evo and co as they're the best racing games IMO{certainly non subscription based}.
One of the things that annoys me about Shift1 is that it's floaty, so if you get distracted for a second or so, you can find yourself off road, and on many tracks this isn't a huge problem as it generally occurs at higher speeds, of course this is a deadly combo with a Zonda/Lambo/Bugatti at Nords.
Not only is it contrary to how sports cars handle at these speeds, I suspect it's a deliberate inclusion so we can experience their crash mechanics/blur etc, trouble is, people will crash all by themselves, they hardly need the addition of floaty high speed handling to ensure offs.
Shift1 was nearly one of the greatest SP racing games, it has SPA, Nords, Road Amercia, Laguna Seca, scores of very fast cars, and most cars upgradeable with huge power boosts, good GFX, excellent car models, decent replays, decent FFB, but was letdown by a dodgy driving model.....that said, it's not in such a bad state that most people wouldn't like it, especially if they have a wheel and it only costs $20 or whatever.
It should be pointed out that the floatyness causes you to over correct and being that I have to run my wheel at 220deg of rotation to eliminate fucking annoying steering deadzone, my car is somewhat responsive and is often induced into tank slapping episodes......kids might find this amusing, but I don't.
Considering the precision of F12010{multiplatformer}, it seems to me that wheel precision or imprecision must be a design choice, and if SHIFT2 hasn't fixed the floatyness/deadzone issues, then I for one see no reason to ever play it, no matter the cost.
There's also talk of Shift2's GFX having gone backwards whilst system demands having gone upwards, and since Shift1 is close to maxed on my 4850 box, the last thing I'll be doing is upgrading for it's sake, unless it turned out it was a remarkable improvement over S1....which I see or hear no evidence of.
