Okay so my brother works at the local airport as aaa.. relay-platform hub-balance calculating-officer or how the hell do they call it, and he (but mostly the cabin-crew) usually finds various stuff the passengers left after they took off from the plane. They doin some kinda lost-and-found for these stuff (cell phones, sunglasses all kinds of stuff but mostly books) and in 90% these items are left behind forever.. I mean for a few months and after that they "magically vanish"..
The point is, one day when my bro throwed some random book in, he saw a GBA lying there and he examined it. The fellas there noticed him and said that "it rots there since summer and nobody asked for it, so you might as well take it." And he did, in fact he gave it to me when I was at his place. Needless to say, the battery was dead. I never gave a damn about consoles before, but I remembered a repair-shop that's nearby, so for the first occasion I visited it and ended up with an adapter. I got this thing juiced up and experienced Metroid for the first time (that was the cardrige inside it) and you know what, this space-blaster bitch just raped me away from my (handheld) console virginity and I enjoyed it fully.. This stuff is awesome. It's so simple with all the few buttons on it, yet the game is complex enough, and totally rewarding and satisfying. Not to mention the whole retro feel that just adds to it.

Maybe this gba-thing was kinda for kids, but now I'm planning to get some more games for this stuff just in case I'm finished with Samus Aran.

You might want to try Super Mario Advance 2 or Mario & Luigi.

I tried both once I got a GBA (got one for free when I bought a second hand DS for the kids) because they are supposed to be very good, but I could not get into gaming on a handheld at all (only sudokus in Brain Training on the DS had some lasting appeal, I must be getting old).

No way. Mario was the number one reason I stayed away from consoles. I mean how can a mustached old bum be the protagonist character in a video game? That's honestly the worst idea, I just can't see how it became so successful.
But I appreciate the tips. I'm thinking to buy a flash-card and then upload some roms. I found out that Lost Vikings are on this platform, I loved that game back then on 386. I'm also looking forward to play some rpgs since I like that genre the most. Maybe try out some turn based strategy..
But as you said that you could not get into handheld gaming, it's exactly the opposite for me. I mean I never use it outside the house, but the thing that it's like a book, I can sit down wherever I want, is really to my likeing. I can even play it with one hand. Or while takeing a dump. I thought that I'm getting old too because I didn't like any game that got out since Oblivion (okay Fallout 3 was an exeption) but it looks like I can totally get into this 2D platforming.
I don't think I'll ever try the DS, it looks too much of a fuss.. more fragile, with more buttons, two monitors and with a fuckin pencil that I likely lost on the first day.

You proved yourself wrong with staying away from handhelds didn't you, then why not try the games that are generally considered to be very good on that platform? Your loss if you don't I guess.

Yea maybe they are the most played, but that doesn't prove anything. There are hundreds of examples, that good games are not necessarily the ones played by the masses, so that was never a good starting point for me. Otherwise I might as well take pokemon or something..
Watched a video of gba mario games and they seem loathsome. Poor graphics meets with idiotic music and everything seem so BASIC.. While blasting my way through this alien contaminated space-base is great. It reminds me of the game Shadowman, where I was totally free, there were no levels I can go wherever I want (mostly wherever I can), visit secret areas, getting new abilities and weapons ==> slowly becoming unstoppable while the gameplay remains tense. This is what surprised me the most, that it's just as complex as a pc action game, only the realization is different. And I'm still not done with it.
If I get a hold of a flash-card, I might check out Castlevania, that seems similar.

I pointed out 2 games that were highly rated, where did you get the idea that those are most played? I didn't recommend Mario Kart did I?

That why I recommended Mario & Luigi, that's an RPG, known for its depth and humour. And usually Mario games have good graphics for their platform. But let's skip this discussion, neither of us has any experience in this field.

Yeah, I read that name quite often (positively) too. There are several Castlevania games IIRC, so beware.

Astroboy looks great thanks for the tip. Red and saw some interesting things about it. But the main character looks kinda gay.. On the other hand the story and the time travel-twist might be cool.
Now i'm playing Advance Wars and it's really addictive. The fact that there is a sequel makes it even better. Now i've got a nice list about the games that i'm gonna check out. And some titles i'm just eager to play.
