If you play C&C: The First Decade (EA's attempt to milk out even more money from the franchise) you have to enter a different serial number for every game, and the CD has to be inserted for the game to run.

Come on man, it's a 10 year old game. Just give it up. Next thing they'll put SecuROM on Crystal Caves

Well wasn't it like that before? As in...they didn't touch the games, just made a dvd pack with all the games.

And yes, fucking pathetic attempt to milk the franchise. Ohh they bought westwood and started fucking shit up JUST after red alert 2? Well fuck it, let's do something about the older games as well, EA must make mo' money.

Or i guess you could see it as a nice pack and useful if you want the entire collection but since we're talking about "same game every new year" company EA, i doubt it.

They should have really taken out that protection, i mean, fuck it, they could have just put a crack from any tracker and didn't work at all.

It may be a technical necessity, probably with respect to multiplayer, because they do this all the time (i.e. with Battlefield 1942 and Medal of Honor, which both have editions that include all add-ons and both have 3 serials). IIRC Valve had this too with Half-Life Generation: 3 or 4 serials.

But the fun really starts on the day EA decides to release a Sims 2 Complete Super Ultra Deluxe version which includes all add-ons and stuff packs: this will have a massive 17 serials! If they really were to release a game package with 17 serials, we might assume it is a technical necessity (or EA cares even less for it customers than we already thought).

Your other game publisher of choice (Ubisoft) used to release games with 2 serials from the outset. I remember Splinter Cell Double Agent and Rainbow Six Lockdown having this (one serial is for the copy protection and the other for the multiplayer I think; in later budget releases 1 of those serials was dropped BTW). This was pretty annoying, because these 2 had identical formats and were easily confused.

I still can't wrap my head around this. If it's programming related, then surely they could change the code so all the serial codes are the same.

If it's a security issue, then it's pretty simple to crack, in the README file, instead of putting the one serial number, put all 17

I can imagine a need for backward compatibility for multiplayer purposes, maybe this requires a specific sort of serial for each game.

What do you mean? Serials in the readme-file? icon_scratch.gif
