Anyone played World of Goo?

It's essentially a puzzle game that everyone seems to like. In that respect it resembles Portal.

So I bought it and gave it a go. It is easy to see it's charm, but so far I fail to see what makes it get such universal praise. I am now at a loss how to build the tower of goo in chapter 1 (who would want to build something with such unstable stuff in the first place) and I am not inclined to keep trying for another hour or so.

Could anyone explain what's the appeal of this game?

I've played until chapter 3. It's fun as hell in chapter 1, but in my opinion it gets a little boring from chapter 2 onwards, that's because they introduce some relatively complicated stuff. They should have kept the gameplay simple but fun like in chapter 1.

The appeal of this game is that it's fun and innovative. And simple to play, at least in chapter 1.

Thanks for the info. I will at least try to finish chapter 1 then (maybe I just suck at those puzzle games if this supposedly simple chapter already gives me problems).

Edit: finished chapter 1 in the mean time.

It contains nothing that makes it unfit for kids, that's true. The same goes for most puzzle, racing, sports and adventure games, BTW.

I'll let one of my kids have a go(o) and see how they fare.

.

Not really, many games are aimed at adults, even if kids can play them.....for example, most FPSers are arguably aimed at adults.

Yeah, that's why I did not refer to FPSers but only to "puzzle, racing, sports and adventure games" brushteeth.gif

Not bad actually: I let my six year old play the first half of chapter 1. He did better than I had expected (and he loves it so far).

The game can now be bought for any amount you think it is worth. So it cannot be too expensive any more for anyone.

So Mihai, get the wallet out now!

The results of the 'pick your own price' action can be found here. They are actually quite interesting (IMHO of course).

The developer had included a short questionaire asking why the buyer paid that particular price. One of the options was "I'm a cheap bastard and I'm proud/ashamed of it". icon_cheers.gif Most votes went into the "that's all I can afford right now" option though. Least votes went into "that's what the game is worth to me".

The developer concludes on the basis of these facts:

few people chose their price based on the perceived value of the game. How much the person feels they can afford seems to play a much larger role in the decision than how much the game is worth

It would seem hard to me to determine how much a game is worth *before* having played it though, so this could hardly have come as a big surprise.

The "set your own price" sale is over. The developer published the final results here.

Especially the 'generosity-index' is nice. The Brits and the Yanks did pretty poorly there (only the Koreans and Turks did (far) worse). It's also interesting to see that Linux users paid much more than Windows users.
