We've already done a lot of discussion on games, movies, shows, etc. What about books? Mine would probably be The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Trilogy ( but not really a trilogy) or The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy if you want a compilation of the 5 main books. Easily one of the funniest and most entertaining books I've ever read.

I don't read fiction, my best book was a biography of Bismarck called "Bismarck und das Deutsche Reich" by Erich Eyck. A tough read because it is in German (not my best language) and it is very concisely written. But it is very impressive indeed. There's also an English translation: http://www.amazon.com/Bismarck-German-Empire-Erich-Eyck/dp/0393002357
In the lighter category Robert K. Massie's biography of Peter the Great would get my vote. This is an extremely pleasant read, as all of Massie's books.

To remain amongst germans, I can deffinetly recommend Demian by Herman Hesse. And Steppenwolf after that.

Biographies are great to learn about a particular age in story-style fashion, if they go back long enough in time and go light on personal details.
The fact that I mentioned 2 biographies is a coincidence, I could as easily have mentioned 2 other books by Robert Massie, neither of which is a biography, namely
- "Dreadnought" (about the Anglo-German relations in the decades before WWI), or
- "Castles of Steel" (about the naval warfare between Germany and England in WWI).
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago" is a very good read too, but you must have lots of patience for that: it is rather longwinded and it comes in 3 lengthy volumes (together they are about the same size as the 2 Massie books above, but the latter seem to have so much more content). But it is said to be a literary masterpiece and even someone like myself, who doesn't read literature, could see why.
