The 6 or 7 people that made a half-life 1 mod decided it was good enough to make a game and sell it. 10 years later, Natural Selection 2 is out.
It is probably the best multiplayer online game involving 18-24 players. I highly recommend this game for its uniqueness. It is an RTS/FPS -- a top-down commander for marines and aliens manages and builds up the map with structures and upgrades. The marines and aliens on the field fight in FPS and build/destroy dropped structures. The mod-ability of this game makes it infinitely replayable, and there are already several mods in progress.
That's a good channel to get a view of the game. One important thing to note is that you need a fairly good pc (good CPU and reasonable GPU) to run this reasonably well, because it is not super optimized yet.
I have almost 1000 hours in this game so far since the beta, so i think its good. The average person will probably spend at least 100 hours on it, so I think its worth a look for sure.
I'm excited about the new maps and mods that are coming out as well. It is all integrated through the Steam Workshop and easy to use. There are at least 50 maps and 3 new gameplay modes currently being made by the community that i know of personally, probably a lot more.
