Is it possible to run a game on multiple machines with a single copy only?
If I own a copy of, for example, Half Life 2, and I want to do LAN gaming on 4 of my own computers, do I need to buy four copies of HL2, or can a burn the DVD? Can I cheat and use one DVD drive mounted as an SMB network drive? Can I make a virtual copy of the DVD? Also, will DRM software like SecuROM make this difficult/impossible?

You can run it on multiple machines,unless it utilizes STEAM DRM,whereby only one copy can be activated.I think BERZERKER explained this,threads ago.

That doesn't answer my question. Some (most?) games with DRM let you install on multiple machine (see here). My question is whether these can be run at the same time.

There are only a handful of games that do not allow multiple installs (on different hardware). Flightsim X is a notorious example. Other games with a limited number of installs usually dropped the limitation 6 months or so after release, like Bioshock, Spore and ME.
More common is a model in which a game can be installed without limitation but can be *registered* only once, so on the second and further installations you do not need the serial any more, but only the registration details (usually login name and password). In this scheme you can have multiple installs at the same time but you cannot have them active at the same time. Steam does have an offline mode, which allows you to go online only once, on installation, and not any more after that. This is convenient for single play use, I'm not sure this will be of any benefit for LAN-party setups though. The Ubisoft DRM is worse, because not only is a off-line option missing there, you also need to be online constantly, not just on startup, as with Steam. But who buys Ubisoft games anyway.
The latest scheme for depriving paying customers of their games is to putting only half the game on the DVD and making the other half available only as 'DLC' (which stands for downloadable crap), which requires you to go online and type in a serial for the download wich will work only once.
Mind you this is for singleplayer only. With multiplayer games obviously you need to be online so it is easier for the publisher to apply drastic checks, ruling out multiple sessions with the same serial or login at the same time.
