It helps a lot to make subways, takes just one space on the surface. And you can go nuts underground, connecting shit everywhere because you're not interrupted by anything else.

Well it pissed off so many gamers, that Maxis actually held a conference(ish) to answer some of the gamers concerns. They in fact released the algorithms involved in pathfinding.
People were getting pissed off b/c they couldn't understand why their small city was losing sims even though they had great urban planning.
So you'd build a massive highway, but the sims would be too stupid to use it (they'd take the short road over the longer (but faster) highway. So you actually physically have to demolish roads connecting different neighbourhoods.
And with subway, it doesn't matter if you have 50,000 tracks, if the sim starts off on one end of town, then travels to work on the other end, this constitutes commute time, and he/she just leaves your city.
So the problem is that I have no control on why some douche decides to work in a smelting factory on the other end of town when there is a fucking corner store right next door.
