From a technology POV, Skyrim is a colossal failure compared to Oblivion because all it did was throw out all of its content to look pretty. Skyrim is the technological equivalent of throwing out half of a car's motor function just so you can fit the engine in a moderately sleek-looking sports car design.

Skyrim actually has the best GFX of any game I've played if you factor in draw distance and weather.....actually Skyrim makes me feel immersed in the gameworld, whereas many others games seem like high res cartoons as far as immersion goes.
Skyrim has some of the best sound quality and without question the best use of sound of any game I've ever played.
I modded Skyrim with the Bethesda HD pack{steam loaded} the 2k texture pack, nude females, and beautiful followers, but if you're on console or slow and nasty PC, you wouldn't be able to do or appreciate any of that.
I also have a set of Logitech 5.1's, and as I mentioned, sound use is impressive.
